lost trio headcanons because theyre my mini fixation for the day
for starters i’d like to remind you that the first time jason felt like a person and not a soldier was when he was with leo and piper
ok now actual headcsnons
jason’s hair grew out after a bit and ended up covering the scar (“undercut”) he has on the side of his head from that one bullet. leo likes to surprise people by putting jason’s hair up bc its funny to see their reactions
l: “and look—secret undercut!!”
j: “it’s not an undercut leo, it’s a scar”
p: “the bullet didn’t even touch your skin drama queen”
j: “might’ve. my head could’ve exploded and—“

leo knows a lot of car games which is very beneficial for long days on the argo ii
piper always has a lollipop in her mouth and no one knows where they come from
leo comes up with the oddest nicknames and piper and jason are just. so used to it? jason could be talking to like reyna or smth and leo will come up to him and say

j: “hi leo”
r: “what the fuck”
leo is really bad at picking up social clues so jason does it for him
the wildnerness school had a really early curfew that piper and leo blatantly ignored
they would stay out and wander the halls and hide in classrooms whenever a teacher was nearby
leo was poor and homeless, jason was raised with no regards to currency, spending, or finances, and piper is a nepo baby. the ultimate trio dynamic. arguing for hours about whether $50 is a lot or not (it is.)
leo shares food as a love language
jason loves video games, surprisingly enough (mario kart. MARIO KART.)
piper is constantly taking leo’s and jason’s stuff. hair ties, jewelry, mostly clothes, also mostly food, leo’s homework,
the trio has a movie marathon every friday night. there’s blanket forts, gummy worms, matching pjs, and fairy lights involved. they borrow rachel’s cave, since cabin 1 is too depressing and the aphrodite and hephaestus cabins are way too packed (sometimes rachel hangs around for a bit :D)
picture me this. it’s winter, the lake is frozen over. they somehow find ice skates. utter chaos. leo fancies himself a figure skater, jason is on all fours because he keeps falling, and piper actually did figure skating as a kid

And because I am very happy with how it turned out, I wanted to talk about my art thoughts this time! :D
A little fact about when it comes to my artwork is that I draw it traditionally first before making it digital since it’s just easier for me, which means that these drawings can be in the making depending on my schedule and motivation, and this one took a while since I recently got a new job!
And while I was drawing this one I decided to go against having the flowers scattered around Argos since unfortunately flowers aren’t my strong suit and I didn’t want to repeatedly draw a single type of flower since I wouldn’t know what flower to choose so instead I decided to have Argos laying a flowerbed with things related to the series around him-
Now there are two obvious exceptions-

That being the barts spells and charms advertisement and the top left corner, so I’m going to explain why they’re there.
The flower in the top left corner is suppose to be a tuberose, though it’s probably not obvious since again, flowers aren’t my strong suit, the reason why it’s there is that apparently tuberoses can symbolize attraction, lust, and obsession for someone else, or the very least illicit and dangerous pleasures, and I thought it would perfect thing to add considering Mr. Plant and Argos’s relationship especially with the knife and letter we saw in Gardening with Argos 10 also scattered around!
While Bart’s spells and charms were added since Argos canonical has a shrine for Mr. Plant where he did manifestation to get Mr. Plant to think of him/want him and considering the fact that it’s hinted that they have other charms, I feel like Argos would have been the type of person to buy up their love charms if they have any and if he had access to it! Another fun fact, it was originally going to be an advertisement for Secret Admirer Mail since I fully believe that Argos was on the other end of the phone calls in that but decided to leave that idea for its own drawing in the future:)
Now Argos is holding three things, these being a photo of Mr Plant, a rose with noticeable thorns and the heart shop guy’s face
The rose is probably the easiest to explain since roses are the flower for romance, but I decided to make the thorns fairly noticeable to get the pain and pleasure symbolism, as well as every rose has its thorns symbolism, paired with a picture of Mr. Plant, it makes it obvious who those feelings are directed to
And I had Argos holding the head near his heart for the same reason, holding something close to your heart means that someone or something is very important to you, and I believe that it’s Argos’s most prized possession since when Mr Plant gave it to him, he realized that his feelings were returned and that’s when he and Mr Plant started dating
The soulmate flowers are there cuz when you think about it, it could honestly symbolize Plargos, atleast when looking at it with Argos in mind, Argos says that a soulmate flower would die if they don’t connect with another flower, and who was suppose to die in the series until their relationship came to save them? :)
the covetous flower is there since they just like Argos fr, atleast when it comes to Mr Plant, both of them are lovely to talk and they get attached and jealous fairly easily, I mean we never did see what the letter Mr Flower sent said 👀
Lastly the hearts around Argos are suppose to be the ones he got from the heart flower that he gives to Mr Plant, a continuous show of his love for him ❀
Overall this was a fun art to draw and hopefully I can make more of these for y’all in the future, it feels my heart with such joy when people are enjoying my art, and it’s been such a godsend for my mental health

heyyy, hope you’re having a good night!! if you have the energy and feel okay answering, what’s up w taz graduation? i haven’t checked it out yet but i was thinking ab it. just asking bc you’re the first person i saw talk ab the show having serious issues, but also feel free to not answer this!! hope you have a good week!
i took a nice hot bath, had a strawberry kiwi capri-sun, and did a nice face mask and i’m feeling pretty good - so, y’know what anon? let’s talk about it. 
for anyone who likes taz grad who sees this post: it’ll be tagged with “taz grad hate” (although i feel hate is definitely a very strong word - it’s for the simplicity of tagging it) - so please block the tag if you don’t want to see this post (especially because i put a readmore on a post before and it didn’t show up on mobile and instead gave the full post). mobile tumblr has a tag blocking system, so please feel free to use it! i don’t mind haha
anyway, so this is... probably going to be a lost post, and i wanna go ahead and preface it: this absolutely isn’t any hate on the mcelroys themselves. i love the brothers and their dad a lot, and while i doubt any of them would ever see this (or have it sent to them, or shown to them, because im pretty sure they try to distance themselves from this sort of thing), i just want to make it clear that criticizing a product is different than bashing a person. which brings me to the point of if i do end up sounding as if im bashing someone - please call me out on it! it’s not my intention to target anyone.
with that said, let’s talk about this campaign.
so my problems are as thus: the railroading, the shipping (a fandom problem, but it’s present in the podcast), the NPCs, and some misc problems others have addressed better than i have.
which. i know. that’s basically the entire podcast. (i promise i’ll bring up some positive points to balance it all out). keep in mind i’ve only personally listened to... what, six episodes? and it was enough for me to drop it. some people dropped it first ep, some dropped it ep four, and others are still forcing themselves to listen.
the railroading
there was a time i could handle travis and his railroading [making sure the story goes exactly the way he has planned], because it was the very beginning of the podcast and that’s what you can kind of expect from a plot-heavy podcast. hell, i wouldn’t mind it if the interactions and goofs weren’t a huge part of why i listen to TAZ in particular (which, by the way, is why amnesty still stuck out to me - even if there was a direction griffin wanted to push them towards, the interactions between the players (or players and npcs) made up for any railroading). it’s kind of hard to not railroad a little when it’s story-heavy and you’re trying to built up a world that you’ve put a lot of thought into. however, a huge part of d&d is the spontaneity. 
it’s kind of why i think balance was so popular. while there was railroading towards the end, there was the presence of improv that made it all good. most mcelroy content is enjoyed because of the goofs. the magic brian moment is memorable. the jenkin’s fight still stands out because it was funny (albeit a result of some bad rolls). the boys teasing angus sticks out because the four would play well off of each other. even without that - griffin had talked about how he had to roll with things (the fact he had planned for a fight atop the train, but ditched the idea for what his family members came up with instead). even in amnesty, a couple moments that stick out to me still are ned with the jetpack taking out a pizza hut sign, and the scene with the water where jake was trapped inside. they aren’t as fun, but they still stand out as “things i didnt expect to really end the way they did.”
with grad, it’s just. one after another. the thundermen want to subpoena a xorn? cool, let’s run with that until actually the xorn gets fed rocks and goes home and who cares about the subpoena now. fitzroy wants to keep his cloak? lets talk about it for a while and you also get no rolls to even try to keep it. fitzroy goes to meet higglemas in his office? oh, why are you here fitzroy? im going to keep asking you until you answer fitzroy? you arent getting out of this scene until you answer me, fitzroy, so just tell me why you’re here already, alright, fitzroy? 
and even later in a episode i read a transcript of: hey argo, remember how you have this whole secret motivation? fuck you, im gonna talk about it here in your dream and reveal it to listeners and remove any tension you had building up, and you dont get a choice to talk about it because this all-knowing villain knows all about it :)
and even NOW in the latest episode, there’s a comment that “we should cap argo’s skills here” instead of just... making the checks higher. rogues are good at certain things and usually arent the best in battles. better hope argo never makes it to level 11, because who knows how people are gonna handle the fact that he gets a skill that’ll make it so certain skills can’t have a roll below 10 (reliable talent). 
(griffin, thankfully, calls travis out for that, but still - travis, why would you even imply that, considering you should be aware of how rogues work considering magnus multiclassed into rogue and you played one on tiny heist?)
and in the newest episode, their Big Bad chaos (which, god, i personally hate that name) straight-out says “dont do this” to the thundermen. travis tries to say, on twitter, “a character saying “dont do this” is different than me saying it” but i need to point out that it’s one thing if you’ve said “no” in character but worked with the PCs doing otherwise, but the railroading says differently.
the shipping
ill try to make this quick, because it’s nothing to do with the fandom (ship however you want, man) - but i really feel the need to draw attention to this.
fitzroy, as confirmed by griffin in a ttazz episode, is asexual. not aroace, but ace nonetheless. and i find it... troublesome that the idea of rainer and fitzroy having a relationship is still pushed nonetheless, despite the fact that fitzroy (to my knowledge) was never once shown to reciprocate any feelings. not to be that person, but i really hope that grad doesnt have any sort of romantic relationships in it (at least - not between NPCs and PCs unless they’re actually like... warranted?). 
i dont know, man. one of my closest friends is ace, and i know she wants a relationship, but i think it would reassure her a lot to see an ace character who isn’t pushed into one in case she ever changes her mind. someone once mentioned that they hope fi/tz/ra/in doesnt happen because theres relationships that have that “oh, you can just date” and it goes upwards there to “oh, you can have sex just to please them <3″  (which, to be honest, is kind of a gross mindset - if someone isnt interested, they arent interested).
also, uh, the TTAZZ where griffin states this, there’s kind of the mention tht the whole sexuality question was posed in relation to the episode “creative thinking” (the dream one i mentioned earlier) - which. uh. i don’t know if anyone caught this, but... rainer straight-up wrote fitzroy a letter in the dream like “are you going to accept my proposal? a girl doesn’t like to be left waiting” which. leaves me with some gross feelings because uh.
if... if the whole thing about fitzroys sexual orientation was addressed here, then why would you push your ship anyway? feels kinda iffy, man.
to which i want to say: fitzroy can date. he’s allowed to date. griffins allowed to do whatever he wants with his character. but when a lot of the flirting is met with nothing, i’m not gonna see the chemistry there. just because travis ships it doesn’t mean it’s canon.
the npcs
ah yes. lets talk about the npcs.
there’s... a lot. a lot a lot. i think travis trimmed down how many were present in a scene, but uh. there’s still a lot. and... uh... i kinda wish there wasn’t?
look, i know im going back to balance/amnesty, but just. hang in there for a moment. chill with me. vibe. 
balance didnt have too many NPCs present at all times in each mini-arc. gerblins had some big names like barry, klarg, gundren, killian, yeemick, and magic brian. rockport limited had angus, jess, graham the juicy wizard jenkins, and all of the tom bodetts mentioned. 
amnestys first arc had mama, barclay, jake, dani, pigeon, kirby, minerva, and that was about it for like. big names? and not all of them were present in each scene. 
in the first episode of grad alone: gary, hernandez, jimson, rolandus, zana, rhodes, buckminster eden, rainer, leon, tomas, hieronymous, higglemas, stuart, jackle, bartholomeus, mulligan, groundsy, germaine/victoria/rattles (the skeleton crew). and those are the ones i wrote down (minus groundsy, who i just. ignores. idk him).
like holy shit, my english prof got onto me for having too many characters in my first chapter and i didnt even have half the amount listed there! 
it’s just a huge cast. does this take place in a school? yes! theres bound to be a lot of students present - but you don’t have to name every single one of them, at least not in the first episode!
the miscellaneous
i don’t know if travis ever actually addressed it, but wheelchair users have actually like... said that rainer’s introduction bothered them, because she was like “please ask me abt my wheelchair :)” when travis saying she was in an ornate chair would have sufficed. 
uh. the colonization vibes people have discussed within the centaur arc. mentioned here, the replies here, and this post (and its replies) here as well.
the overall lack of d&d when the campaign was kind of advertised as a return to d&d if i remember correctly
also no one seems to be taking literally any criticism at all which like. ignoring the petty shit, sure, but people have stopped donating to taz and their listener-ship must have dropped some during this entire time - you’d think that maybe someone could say “we need to find out why people dont like the thing and fix the thing” consider this is. yknow. their livelihood.
anyway uhhh 
tl;dr: travis railroads way too much (even now), the shipping in-game has become pushy and gross (especially bc its shoving a relationship onto an asexual character), theres too many npcs that dont stand out well enough, and no ones taking any criticism about the major issues with grad.

the only reason this is going up so early is i haven’t slept yet lmao, i fixed my sleep schedule for about a month and then went right back to being nocturnal.
i've spent the last four nights or so staying up til around ten in the morning binging the magnus archives (i'm about halfway through season three right now) and enjoying the hell out of it. for anyone who followed me bc of my taz liveblogs, rest assured i'm still going to be keeping up with graduation and taz in general :P

75 Years Ago: The Last Nazi U-Boat Surrenders

Described as a “lanky, hawk-faced man,” Charles Eliot Winslow was born in 1909 and grew up in the Boston area. He preferred using his middle name and, by 1940, he was a successful paint salesman and engaged to be married. Winslow had second thoughts about his fiancĂ©, but instead of calling off the wedding, he chose to join the U.S. Navy. So, in 1941, at the ripe age of 31, he found himself called to active duty with the enlisted rating of seaman 2nd class.
In his first assignment, Winslow served out of Boston on board USS Puffin, a Maine fishing boat converted into a minesweeper. In November 1941, just before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, he decided to apply for an officer’s commission in the United States Coast Guard Reserve. Winslow passed the competitive examination and, by December, he accepted a commission in the Coast Guard.
Winslow rose through the ranks quickly. During 1942, he served as executive officer on board the Coast Guard weather ship Menemsha, and then received an appointment to the anti-submarine warfare school in Miami, Florida. Following graduation, the Coast Guard promoted him to lieutenant junior grade and assigned him to the Argo, a 165-foot Coast Guard cutter originally built for offshore Prohibition enforcement. By February 1943, Winslow served as senior watch officer and navigation officer on board Argo. He rose rapidly through the ship’s officer ranks and, in April, he received a promotion to executive officer and gunnery officer.
After only two months as the cutter’s executive officer, the Coast Guard promoted him to commanding officer of Argo. In June 1944, the senior member of a Navy inspection team reported, “The [Argo’s] commanding officer is an able and competent officer, forceful, decisive, military in conduct and bearing, maintaining discipline with a firm yet tactful hand . . . .” Even though he enlisted to escape his fiancĂ©, Winslow proved a solid leader and an excellent seaman, and the Service would retain him as Argo’s commanding officer for the rest of the war.
Johann Heinrich Fehler followed a different path than his American counterpart. A blond, clean-cut man, Fehler was born a year later than Winslow. As a boy growing up near Berlin, he longed to go to sea. After completing high school, Fehler signed-on with a German sailing vessel plying the waters of the Baltic Sea and, after two years, he began serving on a German ocean-going freighter. He next entered the German merchant marine academy and earned a mate’s certificate. In 1933, he joined Adolph Hitler’s National Socialist Party, which was recruiting new members throughout Germany. In 1936, he joined the German Navy as an officer cadet and he would remain a faithful Nazi Party member for the rest of his military career.
In the later years of the war, Fehler’s fate would be tied to the German submarine U-234. One of Germany’s oversized Type X-B U-boats, this 1,650-ton sub’s original mission was to lay mines rather than torpedo enemy shipping. However, after completing its trials and commissioning as a minelayer, the U-boat returned to the shipyard for conversion into a freight-carrying U-boat to transport vital cargoes through Allied patrolled waters.

Back in the U.S., the Navy assigned Cutter Argo and its sister cutters to patrol and convoy escort duties. The cutter carried a crew of 75 men and supported radar and sonar equipment; an armament of 3-inch and 20 mm guns; and depth charges and other anti-submarine weapons. As escorts, Argo and its sister cutters were typically assigned to coastal convoys, tracking underwater contacts and attacking anything that resembled the sonar signature of a submarine.
In December 1944, the German high command summoned Johann Fehler to Berlin for meetings. There, he learned that his U-boat would serve as an undersea freighter to ship important cargo to Japan. The Nazi’s had sent U-boats to Japan before, but three out of four submarine freighters had been lost attempting the passage. However, toward the end of the war there was no alternative for shipping cargoes to Germany’s last surviving ally. Fehler’s assignment to command a transport U-boat proved deeply disappointing, because he wanted to join the fight and command one of the attack subs. But Fehler stayed with U-234 since requesting another position meant postponing his deployment or, even worse, serving in a shore assignment.
Shipping space was limited in even the largest U-boats. To maximize U-234’s capacity, the Germans allocated every conceivable watertight compartment to critical war material. The 300 tons of cargo included many of Germany’s latest armaments and military technology, such as new radar; anti-tank and armor weapons; and the latest explosives and ammunition. Military aviation materials included documents, technical drawings and instrumentation for Messerschmitt’s latest fighter aircraft. U-234 also carried raw materials rarely found in Japan, such as lead (74 tons), mercury (26 tons), optical glass (7 tons) and uranium oxide ore (1,200 pounds). By 1945, lines of communication between Germany and Japan had become tenuous, so U-234 also carried one ton of mail and correspondence for German military, diplomatic and civilian personnel located in Japan.

Not only did Fehler have to transport vital cargo to Japan, his orders required him to ferry critical military personnel. His twelve passengers included two officers of the Imperial Japanese Navy, two civilian employees of the Messerschmitt Aircraft Company, and four German naval officers. U-234 also carried four German air force officers, including flamboyant Luftwaffe general Ulrich Kessler.
Fully loaded with top-secret cargo and passengers, U-234 departed Kiel, Germany, on March 25th on course for Kristiansand, Norway. On April 15th, Fehler deployed from Norway dubious of his mission’s chances of success. He cruised without surfacing for more than two weeks using the U-boat’s advanced schnorkel system and, by early May, he reached the open ocean. In the meantime, the Nazi war machine had collapsed, Adolph Hitler had killed himself and other Nazi leaders had fled Berlin. So the surrender of German military forces fell to Admiral Karl Dönitz, former head of the German submarine fleet.
On May 8th, 1945, Dönitz broadcast the order for all deployed U-boats to surrender to Allied naval forces. By the time he received the order, Fehler was halfway across the Atlantic. He decided to surrender to the Americans and began steaming westward. Meantime, his two Japanese passengers chose to commit suicide to avoid capture and Fehler buried their bodies at sea.
On Saturday, May 19th, Argo rendezvoused with U-234 and its Navy escort, USS Sutton. Sutton’s whaleboat ferried Fehler, his officers and his passengers over to the cutter. According to Commander Alexander Moffat, the senior Navy representative on board Argo, Fehler climbed over the cutter’s rail and cheerfully extended his hand in greeting, but Moffat did not return the German’s proffer of a handshake. Denied a warm greeting by the American, Fehler proceeded belowdecks with his men, remarking, "Come now, commander, let’s not do this the hard way. Who knows but that one of these days you’ll be surrendering to me? In a few years, you will see Germany reborn. In the meantime, I shall have a welcome rest at one of your prisoner of war camps with better food, I am sure, than I have had for months. Then I’ll be repatriated ready to work for a new economic empire."

Below, Argo’s armed guard ordered the prisoners to sit still with their arms folded prompting Fehler to complain bitterly to the American interpreter about their treatment. After learning about Fehler’s behavior, Winslow went below and ordered the guards to “shoot any prisoner who as much as scratches his head without permission.”
After they moored at the Portsmouth Navy Yard, an armed guard escorted U-234’s personnel to the brig. Luftwaffe General Kessler saluted Winslow and politely asked permission to depart the ship, to which Winslow silently pointed the way. Fehler left the cutter protesting to Winslow “Your men treated me like a gangster.” Already simmering over Fehler’s hubris and loud behavior, Winslow pointed to the gangway and barked, “That’s what you are. Get the hell off my ship!” 
Navy officials deemed Fehler, his passengers and officers of significant intelligence value and flew them from Boston to Washington, D.C., for further interrogation and processing.
Meanwhile, the Navy disbanded Winslow’s surrender group. Later, Winslow expressed his interest in returning to civilian life. In a letter to his command, he wrote, “If the Argo . . . is scheduled to fight the wintry blasts alone all winter, my answer is ‘Get me off.’ One winter upside down was enough for me. It took me three weeks [on shore] to regain the full use of my feet!”
To determine the contents of U-234’s cargo, the Navy surrounded the submarine with a shroud to shield the sensitive unloading activities. The Navy Department sent much of U-234’s cargo to its research facility at Indian Head, Maryland, distributing the German technology, including the Messerschmitt plans and instruments, to appropriate government offices for research and analysis. The Navy handed over the uranium oxide to the U.S. Army to support the Manhattan Project and development of atomic weapons.

After U-234’s surrender, the Navy continued to analyze the U-boat’s design and construction. The Navy subjected the U-boat to numerous tests to compare the durability and performance of German submarines to the latest American sub technology. By the spring of 1946, extensive dockside inspections and sea tests were complete and the Navy formally declared the U-boat “out of service.” Finally, on November 20th, 1947, 40 miles off Cape Cod, the Navy used the U-boat as a torpedo target for the American submarine USS Greenfish.
Navy intelligence officials processed Fehler and the other U-234 officers through Fort Hunt, located near Mt. Vernon. After that, the Navy sent the officers to internment camps along the East Coast. Fehler went to a facility reserved for fervent Nazi officers and, in 1946, he returned home by sea along with other repatriated Germans. While Fehler sank no ships as a submarine commander, his association with U-234 made him the subject of journalists, writers and researchers as one of the better-known U-boat captains. After returning to Germany, he settled in Hamburg and passed away in 1993 at the age of 82.

After retiring from active duty, Eliot Winslow settled in Southport, Maine (near the port city of Bath), where he started a business running tugs and local tour boats. For years, Winslow gave summertime tours of the southern Maine coast on board the sightseeing vessel he named for his old cutter, the Argo. Winslow lived to see his nineties at his home in Southport.

A School of Stars!!! Time to go back to class... or in Kyuranger's case, HALF of its members actually attends one! NOTE: This recap-view could have been released much sooner. In fact, I had planned to publish it several days earlier, since the show didn't air last Sunday. But as always, my health got in the way that I simply couldn't finish this piece until... just now. My body and bad weathers are definitely at odds with each other... T_T
- "Uchu Sentai Kyuranger: High School Wars" is a spin-off from the recently released "Episode of Stinger" V-Cinema bluray. This web-series is made available on TOEI Tokusatsu Fan Club app on September 9th, 2017, and will be concluded by a special 5th episode to be released on DVD. Technically, both "High School Wars" and "Episode of Stinger" CAN be regarded as unofficial 49th and 50th episode (though the latter alone has the duration of more). - If we put all currently available "High School Wars" episodes into one, it serves as a full 22.42 minutes feature, which is the average length of a weekly broadcast. Episode 1 (including opening, excluding credits and preview) is 5.12 minutes, Episode 2 is 05.40, Episode 3 is 6.20, and Episode 4 is 5.30 minutes. - Each episodes for "High School Wars" is called 'Period'. In chronological order, they can be generally translated as "Morning Assembly" (Chourei) , "Art Class" (Bijutsu), "Science Class" (Rika), "Physical Education" (Taiiku), and "Suplementary Exam" (Suishi). - For the record, this recap-view does not cover the last one, because as far as I know, it's not released yet (nor has an official release date). It might however, plays out in parallel to the "Episode of Stinger" storyline. FYI, the plot of its first 4 episodes bleeds directly to that V-Cinema story. A direct prologue, if you will. Anyway, I'll be recap-viewing these 4 available episodes separately below (in the style of my take on "Kamen Rider Build"). Read on...
01 - "Commander's Mischief"
- Rebellions sans Tsurugi, receive an undercover mission by Commander Xiao. Their destination is Planet 3B (TV-Nihon, to which this review is based, fansubbed it as such, eventhough other outlets called it as 'Sleeby' or 'Sleevy') of the Norma System. Jark Matter has installed their largest education facility, obviously using one to brainwash people to be their minions. Our Away Team is sent to inflitrate and defeat its Malistrate. - The name of this planet is clearly a shoutout to actor Tetsuya Takeda's popular drama series "3-nen B-gumi Kinpachi-sensei". Raptor even mimics the gesture of Takeda's character when she utters its name. This is a well-known and popularly used gag in Japanese entertainment. Pretty much most if not all parody shows have included nods to this long-running show. - Best part of this episode, is when an unusually giddy Xiao practically spills the bean about one important thing: that the Kyulette system is rigged. As it turns out, he's been hiding the Kyu Globes of several members to ensure the outcome for the rest! And Raptor says, that it's NOT the first time. LOL. Even better, he claims that it's due to "conditions to production", a statement that sounds 'odd' to the others, but works so darn well as a brilliant joke to us audience. I've said before, how Xiao is parroting like a TOEI executive or producer. This is yet another very meta-joke that reinforces that notion! Also, do you notice that the first selected Away Team consists of all suit-characters and not the human ones? There's this unconfirmed fact that it's considerably cheaper to use voice + suit actors instead of the young talents. Hence... productional conditions. LOL. - As much as I would love to see the entire cast wearing school uniforms (Raptor has prepared for ALL of them, Garu's in particular looks Yankee-cool), Kyulette actually ends up choosing all the human cast. Human-looking one of course, if we factor the case of Stinger. All dressed up to portray different kind of student stereotypes, the Away Team heads to Planet 3B. While at the same time, Xiao needs to do some explaining to Champ, Garu, and Balance. - By the way, Raptor's comment that it would be nice to wear uniform, could be a neat callback to when her voice actress dressed up as a maid in one of Go-kaiger's episode. Notice that she's wearing Spada's chef-hat while saying this? So sweet. And Balance's concern about Naga and brainwashing is certainly a jab to his Dark-Naga arc. Lucky's outfit and the high school angle in general, in a way serves as a homage to "Denji Sentai Megaranger" as well. Don't forget, it was the first season/series that aired on 07.30 JST, while Kyuranger is the last to air on the schedule.
Comment: This was undeniably my favorite episode of these web-series. Not just because every members are onboard, but the jokes were simply spot-on, and I just love all those the minor details included here. Especially that brilliant nod to "Kinpachi-sensei" that I didn't catch on my first viewing.
02 - "How Great Thou Art"
- Our Away Team arrives on the facility, and the web-series' face-slapping running gag starts here. Each time the school bell rings, the boys instantly get brainwashed. Lucky becomes lazy, Stinger is all smiley and giggly, Naga is twitching, Spada mopes like a fish, and Kotarou looks... high. Yikes! That's disturbing to see. Hammy is luckily wearing a headset (appropriately in green), most likely listening to Hoshi Minato's song. Thus she gets the privilege to... ugh, slap the others back to their senses. - Their first 'enemy' is Student Council President Indaver, voiced by... *drumrolls* Yousuke Itou, who is none other than Deka Green Sen-chan himself! This is his second participation in Kyuranger, following that minor guest appearance in the "Space Squad" crossover episode. The Indaver points out Naga's silver hair and Hammy as violation to the all-boys school. He challenges the team for a three-rounds duel. - Subject is... ART. Lucky wins the first, eventhough his painting doesn't resemble like the model. Spada loses the second, but he most definitely wins the joke of the day by drawing a delectable fruit parfait as his rendition of a basket of fruits. His chef jokes, smooth catchy foreign phrases, and dandy mannerism never ceases to amaze me. "Originality is vital in cooking!", he says. LOL. Naga is up to do the last task, and it has the most challenging model: the idol Hoshi Minato! Turning this episode into a small "Magiranger vs Dekaranger" flick. - Of course, the final duel's result plays for laughs, as Minato chooses Naga's more gorgeous shoujo-manga rendition as the result, compared to Council President's more realistic one. Angry about this, Council President tries to attack Naga, but Minato hands him the #59 Pictor Kyu Globe to... paint the Indaver's defeat. Ouch! Minato then leaves the room by repeatedly saying "THANK YOU"... or "SAN-KYU" in Japanese. Get it? 3-9? :D - Minato's appearance is nice and all, considering he's underused in the TV series. Unfortunately, it also serves as the most problematic aspect of this web-series. Particularly, in 'WHEN' this series take place. As I said on the extra note for episode 35, Hoshi still has the creepy puppet on his shoulder here. The general assumption is that he's still under the influence of Don Armage. Am I right? But why does he hand out a Kyu Globe then? It does NOT make sense. This action implies that Minato's already a supporter for the Kyuranger, because he's been rallying against Jark Matter since episode 36. Then again, it contradicts the fact that he can even walk freely into this school! Why would Jark Matter let him in if he's supporting the Rebellion, right? - The easiest way to address this, is by ignoring two things: First, the puppet's significance. Hoshi clearly has ditched it ever since he was freed from control, so let's just assume he put it back in as... I don't know, random accessory? Second, Hammy's odd reaction, as if she hasn't met Hoshi before inspite of the aftermath of Pavo's Got Talent. Let's just assume she's fangirling or something. These two measures will allow this spin-off to take place AFTER episode 35, so it makes more sense. Probably not BEFORE episode 36 though... because well, let's just say, the ending of "Episode of Stinger" will contradict this even further. Does that sound confusing? Oh well, let's just proceed to the next period for now...
Comment: In general, it's a fun episode with both Spada and Naga being the episode's MVP. Not to mention, that brief yaoi slur between Magi Yellow and Ophiucus Silver would make their respective fans glee in fangasmic joy. Unfortunately, as I've pointed out above, it's also a major flaw in design. Placing this web-series in the continuity have become... conflicting, all thanks to this one episode. Such a big shame, because the show has been VERY good at keeping things in check prior to this.
03 - "The 88 Quiz"
- Spada and Kotarou discover that they are all trapped inside the classroom. The only way to get out, is by defeating the next 'enemy' that comes walking in. Oh, yes... there's that face-slapping bit again. Yeesh, this gag gets tired REALLY FAST. - Next subject that our Away Team needs to overcome... is Science. In charge of this subject, is the female Vice Principal Indaver, who apparently is the mother of the Student Council President. This one isn't voiced by a Super Sentai alumn, but by Sakura Miyajima from Project R. who... is also a Super Sentai Super-Fan. Duh? - And the new task involves... massive information dump! This is the infamous episode that basically confirms ALL entries of the 88 Kyu Globes. Yes, the listing has been kept wrapped as a tight mystery ever since the show started, yet this one decides to blatantly ignore that restriction and unveils all of them in one strike. Thus, we get a detail Constellation Systems shoutout from #01 Leo until #88 Puppis (Argo Navis and the special ones are not included). LOL. By the way, did you know that the naming is deliberately done in Japanese and not Latin, to avoid similarity to "Saint Seiya"? Tom Constantine of The Tokusatsu Network recently shared this enlightening fact. - What strikes me as peculiar here... is that Tsurugi hasn't been around or even mentioned thus far. Even during this Constellation quiz, Phoenix isn't referenced to him, eventhough Hammy clearly points out the Argo components. It gives off another conflicting impression, that this web-series takes place before Tsurugi's debut in episode 21. I might be reading too much on this, but what if... the web-series was filmed before Tsurugi's actor join the team? On the other hand, Naga's emotion clearly indicates that it at least takes place after episode 31. See? Contradictory indeed! - Anyway, Kotarou gets to be the focus of this episode, because the final 4 missing Constellations relies heavily on his educational background. As in, only those who goes to school SHOULD know them. Hmmmm... really? I'd argue that's not entirely accurate (you'll see why... on the next part), but... let's just play along. - Vice Principal is defeated, hence the big baddie shows up to confront our team. Not only Principal Indaver is the wife of Vice Principal and naturally father of Student Council, and the Malistrate of Planet 3B, but he's also voiced by Yousuke Itou. "There are logistical reasons for why our faces are the same", he says, practically screaming "budgetary limitations" to our ears. His spotlight is saved for the next episode, as a seventh Kyuranger member joins in... simply because his inclusion will be necessary. How so? Read on...
Comment: Biggest highlight from this episode, is undeniably the complete listing to EVERY Kyu Globes. Whether the ones that have been used, or haven't in any form of the series (TV, V-Cinemas, Summer Movie, and/or random sweepstakes). Sadly, it came bringing another continuity issue, though not as massive as the previous one. It's enough to bother me to the bones though...
04 - "Useless Kyu Globes"
- We have arrived in the final part... considering the 5th episode is called 'Suplementary'. And things get... physical this time around. A Super Sentai episode needs to contain a fully-suited action sequence, as well as giant mecha battle. This is where we get both for "High School Wars". Well, one half of it, to be precise. - That 7th Kyuranger I mentioned above? Who else but Champ. But why is his inclusion (and not any other members) necessary? Because... he's the lead supporting character in "Episode of Stinger", being its lead protagonist's partner and all. For your information, this episode directly cuts to the V-Cinema, so Champ's presence is urgently required. So nope, he's not just there because Chamaeleon Green's slap-fest no longer in effect to cure the pesky brainwashing gag. - By the way, Champ arrives wearing a delinquent-style costume. Similar to the one worn by Gentarou of "Kamen Rider Fourze", or Jousuke in "JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable". If only we can see the others in their cosplays too. - Those 4 supposedly school-related Constellations? The Kyurangers actually utilize their Kyu Globes in the battle against a kendo-based Principal Indaver, so it's time to talk about... why I have issues with them. I can give #49 Circinus and #46 Norma a pass, because compass (the mathematical tool, NOT one used for navigation... that's assigned to Pyxis) and ruler are used at school, eventhough Norma is specifically a Carpenter's Level. But #79 Sextans and #80 Octans? Both Sextant and Octant are navigational tools generally used for NAVAL exploration. How on Earth would Kotarou knew or even used them both at school?! He must have gone to a VERY advanced school if that's the case. Because even a guys as old as me have NEVER seen neither one directly with my own pair of eyes. - Apart from Norma, these Kyu Globes are practically... useless. The Away Team can't even use most of them. Norma somehow works because Leo Red is miraculously able to use it as a finishing move. I'd argue that being in the Norma System is the sole reason, hence it gets a spontaneous power up. But let's not be bothered by such useless details... - Our final special cameo appears, this time in person. Kouta!!! I mean... Kouhei Yamamoto a.k.a. Hurricane Yellow himself appears as the school's Chairman. Like most if not all cast members of "Ninpuu Sentai Hurricaneger" (and also "Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger", hence Sen-chan's participation), Yamamoto is well-known for his loyalty to Super Sentai franchise. He's one of the reason why we even had that "Hurricaneger 10 Years After" V-Cinema. So seeing him here doesn't feel remotely like a surprise. - This episode still has one final scene before it ends. Principal Indaver escapes the 'Ruler Attack', and jumps aboard his Consumarz to attack the Away Team. Kyuren-Oh is summoned, and... "TO BE CONTINUED". Wait, for real? Yep. The conclusion to this mecha battle *spoiler alert*, will be available as the opening scene for "Episode of Stinger". We even get an extended preview (featuring that amazing new song by Stinger's actor) for the V-Cinema as a quick reminder...
Comment: This final episode ended VERY annoyingly. That's the general complaints resonating throughout Kyuranger's fanbase. Along with one more thing: useless Kyu Globes. How could I counter that, when those arguments were mostly accurate? Strangely, this was an OKAY episode for me, and not as problematic as the 2nd and 3rd. That's why I'm giving it a mediocre score...
Overall: Overall, "High School Wars" has been a light, mostly clausthrophobic and/or secluded academic-themed gag, that gave the human actors the chance to cosplay as students. Of course, being a highly comedic distraction was not all that bad. Unfortunately, it also served the weakest link among Kyuranger's canon. That slapping-face gag was rather violent, especially when a minor such as Kotarou had to endure the same treatment. That's downright child abuse, right? And then there's that overlaying continuity problem, that made the writing felt... weak and sloppy in general. I'm not sure who wrote this, but if it's the same writer who worked on "Episode of Stinger"... then it sort of make sense (Kento Shimoyama's portofolio includes... "Shuriken Sentai Ninninger"! No wonder...). Sadly, as you would find out soon, this issue also affected that V-Cinema. It will make anyone to question whether both features actually connects to the TV series or not at all. An alternate universe take? As of writing, I'm STILL waiting anxiously for the official answer to this. There's a speculation that we'll be getting some actual closure and proper timeline explanation in that exclusive 5th episode. Tell you the truth though, I'm NOT so sure about that... Next: "Episode of Stinger"... what else? *grins* PS: Assuming I can get it done without any external (unexpected situations) nor internal (my health is still not in full prime) interferences, expect recap-view for Stinger's V-Cinema to arrive tomorrow. Or the day after. Also, this recap-view will not include the Overall Score for "High School Wars". That will be posted alongside review for Episode 5... IF and only IF I can see one, of course.

From Invidia
Invidia is said to be the Roman name for Nemesis. In the PJO canon, Nemesis claims that she is known by the same name by both the Greeks and the Romans because revenge and justice is universal – which isn’t wrong. However, in much of Roman mythology, while Invidia is still associated with Nemesis, she is also seen as an independent goddess, one who differs than the Greek version of Nemesis in that she is primarily the goddess of envy and vengeance, along with the standard Nemesis’ qualities of revenge and justice. Invidia itself was a power that the Romans feared. Literally their term for envy, after winning a great battle, Roman soldiers would use talismans to protect themselves from Invidia, and for good reason. Envy was a sickness that could lead soldiers to craving more battles, more victories, and in their desirable wake, cause great harm in their pursuit of excessive glory. It could also turn the best of men into animals, friends turned enemies in conflict over a lover, a treasure, recognition. Invidia is also a goddess associated with the evil eye – like Nemesis’ ability to speak of one’s fate, only Invidia typically embodies the darker side of fate, bringing about her justice through curses, indirect manipulation, and supposedly even a little bit of “black magic.” (but far less on the magic bit, obviously)
Adriana’s mother is a daughter of Invidia, and as such, some of her powers have transferred down to Adriana, albeit at a lesser strength, variety, and level than in the case of her parent.
fascinare: ability to bewitch a person into an envious state with the express purpose of inducing conflict between that individual and others (this ability would take a bit of a toll on Adriana. Historically, it’s an actual power that the Romans feared, like invidia. It’s the sort of curse that plants a little seed of envy in someone’s heart. The caster, again, has no say over what results from this. They’re just drawing out what envious emotions a person might have deep down in the hopes that coaxing those emotions out will allow them to fester into a full-blown conflict by the affected’s hands. It’s not a quick process, but a slow one, and the results vary widely depending on the person. If they’re truly good at heart and generous, for example, this ability really wouldn’t affect them. It’s just stirring up what’s already there and what happens depends entirely on the individual and their pre-existing personal issues)  
poison tongue: venom can cast fascinare or cause mild nausea and dizziness (rarely unconsciousness) via a kiss (okay literally this amused me so much and I was dying to test it out as an ability. In a lot of lore, Invidia is said to have a tongue that’s actually poisonous – likely due to the fact that her symbolic animal is a snake – but obviously, that’s a little extreme for demigods and especially for legacies so I’ve watered it down to this – for one, Adriana would obviously have to engage in mouth to mouth contact to make this work (how awkward and uncomfortable for her lmao), and thus she realllly isn’t too fond of it. She’d have to use this in order cast any sort of fascinare power, but additionally, it could be used to disorient someone – as if a sudden unexpected kiss from a daughter of Mars isn’t disorienting enough – it’s not likely to cause someone to pass out unless Adri has to commit for some reason because it’s absolutely necessary. We’re basically talking a delirious effect, not so different from the dizziness and disorientation of being significantly drunk, and it doesn’t last very long. Maybe five minutes, ten if she’s lucky. If she can get along without having to use this ability, she will. It’s more of a dire need for escape sort of trick)
The Influence of Luna
Both Adriana and her cousin, Fergus Fitzgerald, share the same traces of blood from the goddess Luna via their great-grandfather, Aulus Caninii, a son of Luna. Of the two of them, it’s Fergus that is most affected if only due to his heritage as a son of Oceanus, as the sea and moon have always been closely aligned in the ebb and flow of the tides. For Adriana, this heritage brings little more than a slight influence of mood and preference for time of day. She is, by nature, more of a night person than a day person. Early mornings are especially miserable, but years in the Legion and the formation of a daily 5AM running habit have helped her to combat this fact. She feels her best and strongest at the apex of the full moon and her crummiest and most fatigued at the apex of the new moon. Unless someone was meticulously attentive to Adriana’s day-to-day patterns or had been told of this heritage by Adriana herself, it is highly unlikely they would recognize this behavior as anything of note. As such, Adriana does not claim outright to be a legacy of Luna because her effect on the daughter of Mars’ blood is so minimal.
Headcanons:
Ancient lineage and political powers aside, the Caninii are well-known for their talent of dog training. In the age of the Roman Empire, dogs were common companions beside men in battle. Adriana’s family has continued this tradition with pride. The Legion’s ‘war dogs’ are held at a training kennel near the stables in Camp Jupiter. Renzo, Adriana’s half-brother, is currently responsible for their training and upkeep, but Adriana often steps in to assist. She has only fully trained one dog thus far, and that is Septimus, her German Shepherd and inseparable partner.
Adriana’s most prized possession is her longsword, an heirloom that has been in her family for generations. At its original forging, the sword was named Servatrix, but Adriana has developed her own conventions and opinions that oppose a number of the Caninii’s long-held beliefs, and has subsequently changed its name to Grayclaw. The blade is forged of an imperial gold and silver alloy. The fusion of metals takes away from their overall effects, but provides the advantage of having both lethal elements on hand.
Biography:
Born to Livia of the family Caninii, Adriana has wealth, respect, and an ancient bloodline that has inevitably determined her future. She was raised in New Rome by her grandfather, who filled her head with tales of the great achievements of her forefathers as soon as she was old enough to understand them. He is a charismatic and brilliant man, but this family patriarch holds his kin to strict expectations.
Gaius made it clear to Adriana that she would be responsible for upholding their family’s glory and reputation. From an early age, the young Roman knew who she was and what she could do. She trained for hours each day in combat, weaponry, war strategy, Roman history – whatever was necessary to educate her as a proper soldier. But while these lessons came naturally to her, Adriana was wary of how her grandfather was crafting her to his ideals. Gaius is a Roman Senator, not a family man. He has political desires and an indomitable ambition. While he holds his advantages close, he is not inclined to treasure them. Adriana, like her family namesake, is a dog. Albeit a well-bred one. Gaius showed her off and trained her to be obedient, to come when called and to strike at his order. But Adriana was, and remains, resilient. Years of observing her grandfather’s tactics led her to develop some skills on her own. His little warrior learned how to play false appearances. Whenever Gaius was confident that his guidance was building toward his desired end, Adriana fed his belief, keeping her conflicting feelings and opinions to herself.
By the time she arrived at Camp Jupiter, Adriana was a hardened fighter. With high commendations from Gaius and several other elite members of New Rome’s society, she was assigned to the First Cohort. The rigorous training of the First not only developed the skills that she already possessed, but also nourished her true personality – something her grandfather had sought to suppress in order to maintain his control. Adriana is loyal yet independent, studious yet audacious, valiant, and though ruthless, fair. She’s not the type of person to judge at first glance and believes strongly in second chances.
But, when the Argo II attacked New Rome, the resulting damage shook the daughter of Mars into believing that her grandfather had been right all along – you can’t trust a graecus. The Battle at Half-Blood Hill had robbed Adriana of friends and allies, leaving her with a deepening malice toward their East Coast counterparts. She viewed the unification as a betrayal to those that she had lost and refused to stand for it.
Adriana’s change in attitude did not go unnoticed. Gaius picked up on the shift in his granddaughter and sought to seize the opportunity it presented. One night, he drew her away from camp and introduced her to the secret society lurking beneath the streets of New Rome. When she emerged early the next morning, Adriana was not only the dedicated soldier she had always been, but also the Cult of Romulus’ newest inductee.
Shortly after her induction, Adriana was appointed Centurion of the Fourth Cohort. The office suited her well. It gave her a chance to improve the skills of some of the Legion’s less popular legionnaires and, with the cohort’s sizable inclusion of Greeks, to keep an eye on the activities of the foreigners. However, as months of leadership turned to years, Adriana came to realize that despite the few upsets between the camps, the transfers from Camp Half-Blood weren’t actually all that different from the demigods of the Legion. They showed no signs of plotting against New Rome and Adriana had even begun to grow fond of them – Imagine that! A member of the Cult getting friendly with the enemy? She was lucky that her Cult companions passed it off as keeping their enemies close. Even so, the Cult tightened their grip on the daughter of Mars. She could hardly take a breath without them taking note. That leash has loosened since then, but Adriana is still walking a perilously thin line.
Adriana was seduced into the Cult of Romulus by their power and promises of reformation at a time when it seemed impossible to hold anything but malice toward the Greeks – a malice that she no longer possesses, a power that she doesn’t need, and a reformation that isn’t necessary. The true battle is not against one another but against the monsters and deific powers that threaten their livelihood. How could the city’s darker powers not see that the Roman demigods and their Greek counterparts are a far more formidable force together than divided? To the war strategist ingrained in in Adriana’s bones, this is common sense.
Adriana’s knowledge of the Cult’s existence coupled with her opposing opinions is a loaded gun. If she could drop out of the Cult she would do so in a heartbeat, but you can’t just leave a cult. Especially not one so prominent and powerful as the Cult of Romulus. They have ways of keeping their wayward members in line, as she already knows, and speaking against them publicly – or worse, revealing them – would be suicide. Adriana is doing her best to remain a neutral party in quiet defiance, but not all the Cult’s demands are so easy to ignore

Yet while she keeps to the shadows in her disagreement with the Cult, the daughter of Mars has not been as subtle in regards to her kin. The Caninii clan’s esoteric convictions and unjust manipulation for personal gain have built them an empire within New Rome, but the power they wield is abusive and Adriana won’t have it. Wielding her status as the single direct descendant in her family line and the next head as she would a weapon, Adriana is determined to reshape the conventions of her house. If put toward good rather than gain, the wealth and influence of her family could be an avenue for positive change, but Adriana is a warrior, not a politician; and without allies and support, she can’t expect to enforce any alterations to her kin’s ancient dynasty anytime soon.          
For now, Adriana is treading lightly. Balance isn’t easily maintained – anyone with Invidia or Nemesis’ blood in their veins knows that all too well. However, with the right pressures, sharpest moves, and great patience, fate can sometimes be swayed in one’s favor. Adriana does her best to be an honorable leader and a fierce soldier, appearing ever the pure, loyal Roman until she has her chance to tear away from the destiny that has been fashioned for her all her life. And when she finally gets it, she’ll do what she does best. Fight.

Adriana’s senses went to the wayside as she stood in the midst of the crowd. The heavy beat of the music that projected from the stage pulsed across the field, stoking the spectators’ energy in the late night hour. At the high volume of the rock band’s set and the surrounding exclamations of enjoyment, hearing anything else beyond the event was nigh impossible. Adriana had gotten swept up in the tide of it all. With a beer in her hand and a friend at her side, she couldn’t imagine a better evening; and she didn’t want to, because as soon as she wished it, her fun was likely to end. The Fates were relentless pranksters in that way.
The concert had been Dani’s idea. The Second Cohort legionnaire had snatched the centurion to the side between training sessions and to lay out their plan for a brief escape. Adriana, always willing to step outside the boundaries of her lifelong home, had eagerly accepted. She could always rely on the legacy of Hades to come up with the most entertaining – and sneakiest – schemes. It didn’t even matter to Adriana that she wasn’t familiar with the band. Between the political stuffiness of New Rome and the responsibilities of Legion leadership, the supposed demigod sanctuary could become a suffocating environment. Adriana would take any opportunity to step aside, let loose, be herself, and just breathe.
So there she was, jumping up and down among a mob of strangers and releasing her pent up stress through a non-violent outlet. As the music tapered down for the band’s transition into the next song, the daughter of Mars took a moment to rest, chuckling through panting breaths at the dark-haired person beside her. “You’re right,” she grinned. “They’re not bad.”
“Not bad?” The legacy of Hades scoffed in mock hurt. “For all the trouble it took to bring you out here, you would claim that these beautiful, Muse-embodied humans are not bad?” Dani clicked their tongue disapprovingly. “Remind me never to invite you to join me on my ventures again.”
Adriana shook her head at the short legionnaire. Despite being the sage, Dani was a good six inches smaller than her, at the least. Not that their height made them any less ferocious. Dani was a wild soul and Adriana admired her temperament greatly. “Hey, don’t look at me,” she shrugged with an indifferent look down at the other. “You’re the one who took me out to see a band I’ve never heard of in my life. It’s not my fault I don’t have a reference to judge their music.”
Dani groaned through an exasperated sigh. “Fiiiiine. You’re excused.” Around them, the fresh beat of a new song began to shake the ground. “You’re lucky I like you, Romaíos.”
Adriana had taken that line as the close to their conversation, ready to sink back into the sounds and the madness, but just as she was teetering on the height of that edge, a pulse beneath her feet caught her off guard. No one else appeared to have felt it even though it was off beat to the rest of the tune, and there was a telltale prickling sensation that ran down the centurion’s spine. She stopped moving, eyes attentive, feeling focused, and again felt the thump resonate across the ground. In an instant, entertainment had turned to vigilance.
“Dani, stop.” Adriana reached out and placed a firm hand on the Greek’s shoulder.
Dani hesitated a brief moment before they complied. They pouted up at the Roman and opened their mouth to object, but then they felt it too, right down to their bones. The lightheartedness faded from their expression and a hand ventured toward the holster strapped to their thigh in preparation. “Where is it? Do you see anything?” they asked as their honey-colored eyes swept around them – which achieved nothing considering their height.
Adriana fiddled with the ring brace that lived on her right middle finger, sharp eyes piercing through and over the people around them. “I don’t know
 it’s pretty hard to see around– wait.” Out of the corner of her eye, Adriana caught a flash of movement. Nothing concrete, but when spotting shadows, it was usually best to assume it was something rather than leave it be and get stabbed in the back for it. “Come on,” she stepped in front of Dani, starting to lead them out of the crowd.
Not seconds prior to the two of them stepping onto open ground, a guttural screech cut through the air. Both demigods snapped their heads to the left and were greeted by the misfortunate sight of a scorpion with a van-sized body. “Every fucking time
” Adriana growled under her breath and swept her thumb over the side of her ring, cueing the accessory to spin around her finger and break off. It extended into a hilt and a blade which she twirled in her hand with practiced ease. In a similar fashion, Dani equipped themself with a pair of curved knives. Adriana looked over to them and the pair shared a silent transfer of information. They knew each other well enough by now to coordinate their attacks without the distraction of words.
I take front, you take back?
Yeah, let’s go.
At Dani’s finalizing nod, Adriana turned to the monster and grabbed its attention with a high-pitched whistle. “Hey ugly!” The beast hissed, shuffling around on its spindly legs to lock eyes with the young warrior. “This what you’re looking for?” She stepped forward once with arms spread to taunt it, and sure enough, it lurched forward with another screech.
Adriana reinforced her stance, standing her ground until the scorpion only had a few seconds of distance left to close. At her side, the legacy of Hades slipped into the nearest shadow and a grin split across the centurion’s lips.
Time to go to work.

MDM 691 Professional Practice
This is it, graduation is right around the corner. I have successfully made it through the entire Full Sail University MDMFA program. Just over a year ago, on February 26, 2018, I started my first class on this journey.
MDM 501 Personal Development and Leadership
This month Robert Greene introduced the concept of Mastery and self-reflection. He emphasized the importance of committing to an apprenticeship, returning to a childlike sense of wonder to stimulate creative energy, using your imagination to the fullest, and always being open to new ideas (Greene, 2012). Over the past year, I fully committed myself to this program with the intention of becoming a great professional designer. During this time, I did everything I could to use my imagination in every way possible and to stay open to new ideas.
The first assignment for this class was to create a 3-5-minute introductory video presentation reflecting the insights I gained from reading “Strategies for Finding Your Life’s Task” (Greene, 2012). As someone who avoids being on the other side of the camera, this video was one of the most difficult things I had done, I consider it a great personal victory to have been able to accomplish this assignment.
This course introduced me to setting up my Tumblr account and the concept of using it as my Master Journal, a process I continued to use throughout every class. Learning and utilizing these techniques provided a timeline that could be linked to my thesis to recount my journey.
MDM 525 Defining Clients Needs
Although I didn’t know it at the time, the work I did in this class was pivotal to much of the design work I did throughout the program. I was able to use the introductory research I did on Iceland during this class in over half of my remaining classes in the MDM programs.
One of the assignments throughout this month was to sketch a total of 500 different images. Hand-to-pencil isn’t one of my strong suits, whether it’s sketching pictures/drawings or words, so I didn’t think I could do it. But I made it a goal to push myself and accomplish this. One of the techniques introduced was to create a sketch and to make small changes, creating new versions. This follows David Airey’s recommendation of focusing on one thing, he said that you should “leave your client with just one thing to remember about your design” (Airey, 2014). I was incredibly proud of myself for meeting this goal of sketching over 500 different logo variations for this assignment.
MDM 530 Brand Development
This class was exciting for me, it introduced me to my first design project of this program. I enjoy creating vector art and like the endless possibilities created by this type of design work. I was able to increase my skills, abilities, and knowledge in working with Illustrator. This class also introduced me to the creation of my first toolbox.
The skills I continued to learn in Illustrator enhanced my ability to complete my thesis project using the Adobe products. By the end of this class, I had created several variations of three different logos, each with numerous color combinations and typographic choices. I was proud of this accomplishment, they were my first logo creations and I believe they were successful.
MDM 555 Effective Copy Writing
This class provided me with a different perspective of looking at the world of design. I had never thought of it as including print ads. Not only do I recognize that they are intertwined, but as I am job hunting, I am frequently seeing them combined professionally.
The increased experience in research and the expanded types of research ultimately helped me with my thesis project. By the time I submitted my final project for this class, I was excited about the work I had accomplished and proud of how well it had turned out. I believe the print ads I created are successful.
MDM 565 Design Research
This was one of my favorite classes, probably because it was one of the first classes I was afforded a breadth of personal creativity. I know my first ideas are never my best, in fact, they frequently don’t resemble the final product. I knew my initial ideas weren’t that great because there wasn’t anything innovative about any of them. As I continued to research, innovate, and brainstorm I was finally struck with what I knew was an innovative solution to the design problem. This was an incredible personal triumph for me, one of my greatest of this program.
A conversation I had with Professor Argo, explaining to me the importance of using documentation to support my design decisions stuck with me throughout the remainder of the MDMFA program. As a result of this, I have made every attempt to use this advice in everything I have done, including my thesis project.
MDM 570 Organizational Structures
Everything about this course was new to me. I had never animated, used an audio program, or even created a storyboard. But I didn’t want to use this as an excuse to keep my project simple. While I’m far from an expert in After Effects and Audition, but I was able to teach myself enough to create a multi-faceted animated project with audio. This was a personal victory, one that will be a positive addition to my professional resume. I hope to strengthen these skills in the future. Learning these programs so quickly gave me the skills to learn how to create my thesis project is such a short period of time.
MDM 615 Design Strategies and Motivation
The project that was assigned at the beginning of this course was both exciting and terrifying. It was exciting because I was going to have the opportunity to create a media project, from start to finish without the boundaries that existed in the previous assignments.  It was terrifying for the same reasons. Although I wasn’t sold on my initial concept, brainstorming and several design iterations brought me to the concept I ultimately decided to create. I felt excited and proud of my design idea, I was excited about the opportunity to make it come to life.
Although I used brainstorming techniques in every class, I feel it was particularly beneficial in helping me create the design project that resulted from this process. Learning how to successfully brainstorm the creative process was useful in creating my thesis project.
MDM 620 Design Integration
A lot of this course was about figuring out the details of this project. During this class, my project expanded to a 51-page color eMagazine with high-quality images. It involved a number of decisions every step of the way. While, on a personal level I felt a high level of pride and success as this was coming together, on a professional level, this project will complement my portfolio.
This class helped me learn the discretion I needed to select the elements that will elevate my thesis project.
MDM 650 Multi-Platform Delivery
Just when I thought I was ready to wrap-up the design of my project, I was challenged to push myself farther and add specific innovative features. I did additional research in an attempt to figure out how to add these features that would serve to further elevate my design project. Although I wasn’t able to make this feature a reality at that time, I did end up with a project I consider to be one of my most outstanding personal triumphs to date.  
I continued to use the techniques of pushing myself as worked on my thesis project. I chose to add the hover feature on each of my images with the intent of elevating each page.  
MDM 640 Measuring Design Effectiveness
This class gave me an interesting perspective on the profession of being a graphic designer. Since I’d had experience doing questionnaires and surveys, I thought it would be easy. However, I quickly discovered it was much more complicated and difficult than I expected. Since my initial posting only resulted in 5 responses, I had to make personal contact with people I know to expand my data pool. Within a week I had 32 responses to my survey. Evaluating the results of my questionnaire yielded results that were helpful and in guiding me to what changes needed to be made to my project to help it be more successful. Having my questionnaire confirm that the majority of my design decisions were the best or right ones, was a positive, self-confirming victory.
MDM 690 Presentation of Design Solutions
This class introduced me to the Wix, a website building platform site (https://www.wix.com), I was to use for my thesis project. This was the first time I had designed a website in fifteen years. Having to follow a template to create a design in such a short period of time can be more complicated than having a blank canvas to work with.
Adding this website as well as being able to create a new website to add to my portfolio can help me professionally, it makes me a more well-rounded and marketable designer.
Because of personal, physical circumstances, actually being able to complete this assignment on time was a huge personal triumph. Unfortunately, I was unable to create a design to the standard I would have liked.

These twelve images are my personal experience maps, they represent my journey through this program. They show my ups and downs, my thoughts, my feelings, and what I was doing at that time. My choice to use words is a reflection of the amount of research and writing that was expected throughout the program. The words I used in each month are all from the research papers I wrote that month. 
Each month I earned something new from each class. As I reach the end of my journey of earning my MFA, I believe I achieved my goal of earning a place amongst the other AIGA professional graphic designers.

This week’s theme: Mythology!
Last week we embraced Greece via Naming! Now this week I have decided to show you a first dose of Greek Mythology (Basics).
You may perhaps know the Dodekatheum (ΔωΎΔÎșΏΞΔο- Dodekatheo), the whole Greek Pantheon and that we, Greeks, have a rich Mythology thanks to our ancestors. Perhaps the names “Zeus” (Î”ÎŻÎ±Ï‚- Dias) , “Persephone” (ΠΔρσΔφόΜη-Persephoni) , “Hera” (Ήρα- Ira) sound familiar

But what are all these? And how are they connected?
Let’s find out!
So, this whole “Mythology” (ÎœÏ…ÎžÎżÎ»ÎżÎłÎŻÎ±- Mithologia) started when the old Greeks wondered “Why does this happen? Why is nature like this? Who is in charge?”. So they tried to explain all nature phenomena by putting a deity in charge of them. Specifically, twelve main “boss” gods and goddesses.
~Zeus (Î”ÎŻÎ±Ï‚), the God of Thunder and all Weather Phenomena as well as Hospitality. Son of Cronus. ~Hera (Ήρα), the Goddess of Marriage and Zeus’s wife. Daughter of Cronus. ~Athena (Î‘ÎžÎ·ÎœÎŹ), the Goddess of Wisdom and Knowledge also daughter of Zeus (yes, entirely Zeus. No woman involved. A big story) ~Poseidon (Î ÎżÏƒÎ”ÎčΎώΜας), the God of Sea and Ships. Son of Cronus. ~Demeter (Î”ÎźÎŒÎ·Ï„ÏÎ±), the Goddess of Agriculture. Daughter of Cronus. ~Dionysus (ΔÎčÏŒÎœÏ…ÏƒÎżÏ‚), the God of Wine and Entertainment. Son of Zeus and Semele (heroic mortal) ~Ares (Άρης), the God of War. Son of Zeus and Hera. In love with Aphrodite. Okay but
how did they exist? Like they always existed?
Nope. No, my pal, they didn’t.
First existed Chaos (Î§ÎŹÎżÏ‚). Then out of a sudden came Gaia (Γαία), the personification of Mother Earth. She created Uranus (ΟυραΜός) by herself who is the personification of Sky with whom she bore the Titans, the Giants, the hills and Pontus (a sea). Yes Mother (?) x Son (kind of).
Okay here’s what happened with the Titans. Oops, we will skip this whole gruesome story and proceed to where Cronus and Rhea (Sibling Titans) bear six familiar children known as the big six; Zeus, Hades*, Poseidon (Big Three Alpha Males) and Hestia, Hera, Demeter (Big Female Deities of the Dodekatheum ).
*Side Note; Hades (ΆΎης) isn’t part of the Dodekatheum even if he is in the Big Three Cronus’ sons. You wonder why? Simply, because he is the God of the Dead and the whole Underground is his kingdom so he doesn’t need to be together with the rest of the Gods in Mount Olympus (their hideout). He is kinda like the emo cousin at the corner of the event.
So basically in the past Cronus overthrown his father Uranus. So Zeus decided that it would be pioneering to overhtrown his parent too. So he overthrown Cronus.
This is a long story called; Titanomachy (War of the Titans). Basically something like Attack on Titan but with Greek Gods. 
The most important divine struggle in Greek mythology was the Gigantomachy, the battle fought between the Giants and the Olympian gods for supremacy of the cosmos.

B-but the fights and swords? Calypso? What do I read in a Percy Jackson book?
Basically, my dear friend, you read a wonderful piece of fanfiction. It is proven historically that Homer’s Iliad and later Odyssey were the first fanfictions in history *praise*.All the action is spread across many plays, poems and tablets that haven’t been found or finished. Currently everyone hopes to find a miracle that will add a clue about the whole religion and let us know more about our ancestors and their beliefs.
There are though some myths that are actually note-worthy! Check them below;
a) Prometheus and Fire
Prometheus (Î ÏÎżÎŒÎ·ÎžÎ­Î±Ï‚) was one of the Titans. Till some point fire was only available in Mount Olympus to protect the Gods. He was the one who saved mankind and brought fire to the people. This of course was against Zeus’s order. Theories vary about his punishment.
b) Persephone and the Lily
Persephone (ΠΔρσΔφόΜη) was Demeter’s, Goddess of Harvesting/Agriculture, daughter due to her sexual bonding with Zeus. Persephone was a young lad when Hades tricked her and abducted her. To be precise, she saw a beautiful flower called ÎšÏÎŻÎœÎżÏ‚ (Lily). She approached it and Hades took her away from her mother and forced her to become his wife and Queen of the Underworld.
c) Moirai
The Moirai (Αί ÎœÎżáż–ÏÎ±Îč in Ancient Greek) are the main deities concerning life and death of a human. In English they are known as “Fates”. They are pictured as three old ladies; Clotho (ΚλωΞώ), who was the spinner, Lachessis (Î›ÎŹÏ‡Î”ÏƒÎčς), the allotter, and Atropos (Î†Ï„ÏÎżÏ€ÎżÏ‚), the unturnable.  The gods and men had to submit to them, although Zeus's relationship with them is a matter of debate: some sources say he is the only one who can command them.
d) Heracles and the 12 Tasks
Heracles was a divine hero in Greek Mythology. He is said to be a demigod, a child of Zeus, himself, (what a surprise really) and son of Alcmene (pretty mortal). Hera despised the poor baby because of him being a child of Zeus’s infidelity. Zeus made love to her after disguising himself as her husband, Amphitryon, home early from war (Amphitryon did return later the same night, and Alcmene became pregnant with his son at the same time, a case of heteropaternal superfecundation, where a woman carries twins sired by different fathers). How cool is that?  Thus he was always cursed. However as a symbold of masculinity and manliness he was always successful with his 12 Labours to do unbelievably difficult tasks. 
Perhaps you should read the Wikipedia Page for that or if you want I can have a post explaining The Myth of Heracles. It’s up to you.
e) Theseus and the Minotaur
Like many other heroes of myth and legend, Theseus was born and raised in unusual and dramatic circumstances. His mother was Aethra, daughter of King Pittheus of Troezen. Son of King Aegeus of Athens, who had stopped at Troezen after consulting the oracle at Delphi. The oracle had warned Aegeus not to get drunk or father a child on his way home to Athens—or one day he would die of sorrow.  Upon arriving in Athens, Theseus found King Aegeus married to an enchantress named Medea. Medea tried to poison Theseus. But when Aegeus saw the young man's sword and sandals, he realized that Theseus was his son and saved him from the poison. Anyway. There was this law in Athens that every year they should send as a wage 7 girls and 7 boys to get eaten by the Minotaur, a creature with the head of a bull and the body of a man, which existed in Dedalus’s Maze in Crete, That ship had black masts in grief. One time Theseus went there and with the help of Minos’s daughter (King of Crete at the time. The evil one here), Ariadne, he managed to kill the Minotaur and get out of the Maze. He then started his way back. Though he had forgotten to change the mast from black to white thus when Aegeus saw the black masts he feel into the sea in despair and grief for his “lost” son. That’s why the sea is called by his name.
f) Jason and the Argonaut Campaign
In Greek mythology, Jason (Î™ÎŹÏƒÏ‰Îœ) was the hero who led the Argonaut Campaign. Little Jason was raised in Pelion by Centaur Chiron, who taught him Medicine. At that time, Pelias (brother and king of Iolkos) ordered Jason to perform this mission’ bring the Golden Fleece. Yet another tradition, however, states that Jason took the decision to go and carry the fleece himself: With the ship “Argo” they sailed all the way to Pontus. There Jason was supposed to fight a mighty monster to get it, however Medea (an enchantress) fell in love with him and thus gave him a liquid to prevent the flames of the dragon to hit him. Though, he promised he would take her to Greece. He took the fleece and Medea and returned home. However...yeap Medea didn’t have a nice ending  ÂŻ\_(ツ)_/ÂŻ  (shame on you Jason)
g) Pandora’s Box
Hephaestus was once told by Zeus to make a beautiful woman named Pandora (ΠαΜΎώρα= all gifts). Zeus sent Pandora down to earth and gave her as a present to Prometheus' brother, Epimetheus. Zeus told Epimetheus that he should marry Pandora. Also, Zeus sent Pandora with a little box, with a big lock on it. He ordered not to ever open the box. But Pandora was very curious about what was in the box. She begged Epimetheus to let her open it, but he always said no. Finally one day he fell asleep, and she stole the key and opened it. Basically all bad things happened after that. Disease, fear, despair, hurricanes etc.But the very last thing to fly out of the box, as Pandora sat there crying, was not as ugly as the others. In fact it was beautiful. It was Hope.

How to craft a brand voice
Brand voice covers not only a company’s tone of voice and the language used in its communications, but also what content and messages a brand shares and prioritises.
‘Tone of voice’ is the phrase you find in most brand guidelines, when you get to the section about language. But ‘tone of voice’ is only half the story and half the battle. After all, it covers how you speak, but fails to mention what you say.

Your tone is all about the character that comes through in your language. Whether you say, ‘Welcome, Ms Jones, how can we help you today?’ Or, ‘Hi Fran, what can we do for you?’ Or, ‘Come on in, Francesca, you’re going to love this. Those choices tell audiences about the personality of your brand, making it more (or less) engaging. And that matters. A lot. 
But it misses out the content of your messages. When a new customer arrives, do you tell them you’ve been a trusted name in this industry for 150 years? Or that you’ve been voted Britain’s Nicest Place To Work three years in a row? Or that you’ve just transformed investment banking with your new app? 
All three could be true, but how you prioritise them – and whether you mention them at all – will be just as critical as your tone when it comes to how you’re perceived. That’s why at Reed Words we prefer ‘brand voice’. (That, and the fact it’s the clearest, least pretentious term we can find.)
British Heart Foundation’s brand voice is positioned around ‘Fight for every heartbeat,’ and uses direct and clear messages to get its point across
Style is critical, of course: phrasing, formality (or lack of it) and whether you use quick, choppy sentences or long, flowing ones are all important aspects of a voice.
But substance is just as vital. What does the brand want to achieve? Who are its competitors, and what are they saying? What is the audience looking for – and what can we say to persuade them we’re the place to get it? 
A fully-fledged brand voice that balances tone and content is a strategic tool as well as a creative one – a red thread that runs through every touchpoint of the brand, if you like. And these days, that brand voice matters more than ever.
Brand voice works as brand glue
As we all know, brands project themselves in more complex ways than ever. You can now encounter an organisation in a tweet, live chat or Facebook post as easily as a TV spot or poster. 
Gone are the days when ‘identities’ could be ‘managed’ with a book full of logo sizes and Pantone numbers (if they ever really could). Brands now have much less control over how they appear. 
Often, they’re embedded in someone else’s platform – their own ‘look and feel’ becomes subject to someone else. So anything that can create that crucial ‘red thread’ through every touchpoint becomes an extremely valuable tool. Brand voice does that just beautifully.
Twitter is an obvious example. On a mobile app, @Nike looks pretty much the same as @adidas. The two obvious differences are the logo – and the language. Looking at the two feeds, @Nike’s copy is strikingly short, sharp and active – even in conversation. Very ‘Nike’, in fact. As I write, its most recent tweets (all @ replies) say: 
That’s a pretty consistent voice – and we can probably all agree which is the weak link. The last one, by the way, is in response to a photograph of a Nike-swaddled baby.
And @adidas? Again, here are the latest five tweets at the time of writing (all @ replies again):
Apart from the obvious decision to end every tweet with an emoji, this voice doesn’t seem as sharply defined as Nike’s. You could reverse engineer some basic principles based on the Nike list. And many readers could probably guess the brand from those tweets alone. Both would be trickier with adidas. 
The point is, Nike’s brand comes through powerfully, with zero visual support. That’s voice as brand glue. If you can get the same tone and messaging running through your ads, tweets, app, website, packaging, and everything else, it reinforces the brand at every encounter, wherever it happens. 
That’s not easy to achieve, obviously. In fact, once you get to any sort of scale, it’s bloody hard. But it’s a tremendously powerful asset. And brands have finally woken up to it – big time.
Rewriting the rulebook?
In a way, none of this is particularly new. The fact that you should change what you say and how you say it depending on what you’re writing is kind of obvious. It’s not like Bill Bernbach wrote every VW ad a different way. And David Abbott didn’t write for Sainsbury’s the way he wrote for the RSPCA. Copywriters – and audiences – have always understood that brands have personalities, which their voices should reflect. 
Even so, it’s taken a long time for ‘brand voice’ to move from that sort of intuitive, background assumption into more of a recognised discipline.
Perhaps that’s because writing is one of those crafts that’s easily overlooked. The best writing is often almost invisible. As George Orwell famously said, it’s like a window pane: revealing its subject with beautiful clarity, but never drawing attention to itself.

Writers don’t help, to be honest. We tend to be a quiet bunch – very good at grumbling in pub corners about how little people understand or respect writing, but perhaps less brilliant about really getting out there and promoting it. 
Despite all that, voice has slowly edged into the branding limelight over the past 20 years or so. It’s still establishing itself in many minds (and budgets), but we’ve come a long way from: ‘Here are the layouts, can you just fill in the text boxes please?’
How copywriting discovered its voice
Looking back, things seemed to really get moving in the latter half of the 1990s. For me, a few points along the way seem especially relevant.
First, in 1995, there was Howies. The clothing brand’s clever use of copywriting fitted its products and catalogues perfectly, and helped take the brand to a new level – with customers becoming fans, not just consumers. 
In 1997, Interbrand gobbled up legendary British design firm Newell and Sorrell – swallowing, in the process, a chap named John Simmons. A passionate believer in the power of words, Simmons was frustrated that this side of the brand equation was so overlooked. He coined the phrase ‘verbal identity’ (an equal partner to visual identity), and built a division at Interbrand to offer it. 
That he could do this – that a major agency would support it, and clients buy it – was another big sign that words were gaining new currency in design and branding. 
The identity for Birmingham Hippodrome – by Purpose, in collaboration with Reed Words – was informed by the idea of ‘a stage for life’
Innocent burst onto the market in 1999, and as anyone who’s attended a brand voice workshop knows, it changed the world. As its writer and head of brand, Dan Germain, has said, Innocent was a social brand before social media even existed. It even had its own hugely popular festival, Fruitstock. And arguably, it was Innocent’s unique voice – silly, jolly and almost never about fruit – that was a massive contributor to its success.
In the same year, D&AD recognised the emergence of Writing For Design with a new award category of that name. And in the years since, brands and consultancies have rapidly become more sophisticated in the way they use – and commission – writing. 
They’ve started involving writers at much earlier stages of branding – which makes sense, when you think about it. When you’re trying to boil a complex offer down to a two- or three-word essence, it’s worth having a wordsmith in the room.
More and more, brand writers are doing what they should have been doing all along: helping shape and crystallise the strategies behind brands, as well as developing the guidelines and communication. 
The packaging for the Simple Value Argos range uses short and snappy copy to reflect the simplicity of the goods, and the honest tone reflects the products’ solid quality and good value
Looking to the future
Looking at the examples we’ve covered, it seems brand voice can be useful in everything from clothing to charity to chatting to customers on the phone. As as far as we can tell, the future looks rosy for brand voice. (Unless it’s just our spectacles.) 
Partly, it’s because of a need for coherence in an increasingly omnichannel world that never switches off. But it seems there’s also a deeper recognition of how powerfully words can capture subtle, complex ideas in clear and compelling form. And as brands find more ways to talk (think artificial intelligence, for example), their voices can only become even more important in the future.

The Full Story Behind Supergirl’s (Non-Gooey) DCAU Debut
Welcome to the seventh installment of Adventure(s) Time, where we take a look at a classic episode of an animated series and an issue of its comics tie-in. This time, we return to the city of Metropolis, where Superman encounters a Super
girl?

Supergirl made her animated debut on May 2, 1998, in episode twenty-seven of “Superman: The Animated Series.” It’s a two-parter entitled “Little Girl Lost” (directed by Curt Geda and written by Evan Dorkin & Sarah Dyer, in addition to Paul Dini, Alan Burnett and Rich Fogel.) This was after months of negotiation between the producers, who wanted to feature Supergirl on the series, and DC Comics, which was adamant at the time that Superman should be the sole surviving Kryptonian. The producers were free to use the existing interpretation of the character, “a man-made lifeform made of synthetic protoplasm created by a pocket universe version of Lex Luthor”, but they wanted to stick to Supergirl Classic (gee, I wonder why
)  Kenner’s decision to produce to a Supergirl action figure seems to have been the final push needed to add her to the series.
The first chapter of “Little Girl Lost” opens with Superman exploring the solar system that once housed his birth planet, Krypton. He finds no signs of life, but he does detect a distress signal that’s being beamed from the seemingly abandoned planet Argo. (Superman, whose power levels are closer to the re-imagined John Byrne version in the series, can’t fly independently into space during long journeys, so he travels in a space craft that, as luck would have it, was also a toy vehicle made available by Kenner at the time.) Superman arrives on the frozen, barren remains of Argo and learns that the message was sent by the scientist Kala In-Ze before she placed her remaining family members into stasis tubes. Unfortunately, the ice that accumulated on the planet, which we later learn was knocked out of orbit by Krypton’s destruction, destroyed the tubes and caused the death of the family
with one exception. The tube containing Kara In-Ze, Kala’s daughter, remained intact. When we next we see Kara, she’s living in Superman’s hometown of Smallville, with his adoptive parents, Jonathan and Martha Kent.
The revised origin turns out to be a fairly traditional take on Supergirl. She’s Superman’s “cousin” again, but not in the sense that she’s a direct family member. (Instead, it’s a part of her cover identity on Earth.)  Kara is an Argoan, a species that evolved from the Kryptonians, so while the yellow sun does grant her powers, she doesn’t share a bloodline with Superman. This technicality was enough to please DC’s editorial staff, and even though Supergirl’s altered origin was intended to play a role in future stories, nothing really came of it. Eventually the character was viewed as Supergirl’s relative, and any talk of differing bloodlines was ignored.
Increasingly restless living on the farm, Kara travels to Metropolis after she learns that Intergang is recruiting teenagers as members. Offering to help Superman on the case, her cousin informs her to stay in his apartment and keep her nose out of trouble. Meanwhile, Jimmy Olsen is eager to obtain his first big scoop on the Intergang story, but Lois is quick to dismiss his efforts. Soon, Jimmy and Kara have a chance meeting, and during a run-in with Intergang, Kara unveils her new Supergirl outfit. In this continuity, it’s Jimmy Olsen who provides Kara her superhero alias, a name she quickly adopts with pride.
The story eventually reveals that Intergang is working as a front for Granny Goodness and her Female Furies. Superman (who puts up a rather pathetic showing) is defeated by the Furies after he arrives on the scene, and taken to their home in Apokolips. Supergirl follows, evades an army of Parademons, kills more than a few of them, and eventually rescues her cousin. Granny’s master, Darkseid, soon unveils his plan. Due to a treaty, he isn’t allowed to directly interfere in Earth affairs, but under the assumption that he can’t be blamed for a natural disaster, he’s conspired for a Doomsday Magnet on Earth to draw a comet to the planet. Back on Earth, Jimmy and a reformed Intergang teen named Amy try to disconnect the Doomsday Magnet, but fail. Superman and Supergirl return to Earth, and in her zeal, she destroys the Magnet before Superman has a chance to reprogram it and send the comet away from Earth’s orbit. Oops. Superman flies into space to physically push the comet out of orbit, and a piece  breaks off and flies towards Metropolis. Supergirl flies through the comet piece, destroying it. She falls unconscious, however, and is rescued by Superman.
Later, Jimmy is admiring the byline he’s received for writing the Intergang story (Not bad for a teenager working as a freelance photographer. I hope the Planet’s writing staff isn’t unionized.), while the perpetually cheerful Supergirl flies over the skyline of Metropolis.
You might’ve noticed that five separate writers have credits on this two-part episode. Writing partners Evan Dorkin & Sarah Dyer have revealed that their initial script saw heavy rewrites, after one of the producers changed his mind about the story. Specifically, the conclusion, and the details of Darkseid’s plan, were quite different from what audiences witnessed. (You can read a Toonzone interview with the duo here.) The element of teens fighting against adults that’s so prevalent in the opening chapter just drops out of the story, but was initially an important aspect of the conclusion, which also revealed the origin of Darkseid’s Parademons.
Evan Dorkin and Sarah Dyer saw less interference with their next Supergirl story, which was conceived as a special edition of the “Adventures” comic. Due to the long delays in the debut of “Little Girl Lost,” DC held the comic for months. Instead of being released as a “Supergirl Adventures” special (in the same vein as 1997’s “Batgirl Adventures” one-shot), it appeared as a double-sized issue of the monthly comic.
“Superman Adventures” #21, written by Evan Dorkin & Sarah Dyer and penciled by Bret Blevins, brings us the sequel to the cartoon, in addition to several pages of material that was cut from Supergirl’s origin story. The opening of the story takes place decades before the first act of “Little Girl Lost,” as we’re offered a glimpse into Kara’s life before the destruction of Krypton. Her father has traveled from Argo to Krypton without her, leaving Kara behind with her mother, uncle, and cousins. Following the destruction of Krypton, and Argo’s journey away from its sun, we witness the brave efforts of Kara’s mother to save the family, and the brutal circumstances that force them to risk their lives inside the cold sleep chambers first seen in the opening of “Little Girl Lost.”
Superman’s discovery of Kara is left off-panel, with a footnote pointing readers towards the appropriate episodes of the cartoon, but the reader does witness much more of her early days on Earth. We actually see Kara’s awakening inside S.T.A.R. Labs, and her first meeting with Emil Hamilton (a relationship that leads to important developments in the “Justice League Unlimited” animated series.) And while the animated series might’ve left you with the impression that Kara was only in Smallville for a few weeks before becoming Supergirl, we learn now that she’s had several months to adjust to life on Earth, making friends with the other kids and even attending the prom.
After skipping past Kara’s first adventure as Supergirl, the story moves ahead to the next time Kara visits Metropolis. Superman is going to be away on Justice League business, and Kara is more than willing to volunteer as Metropolis’ hero during his absence. She dons the brown wig and glasses she first wore while visiting the city and tries to play tourist with Martha Kent. Unbeknownst to her, Granny Goodness is implementing a new plan that she hopes will redeem herself in Darkseid’s eyes. Soon, Granny is traveling into the Phantom Zone to retrieve Kryptonian criminals Jax-ur and Mala, who debuted on the series back in Season One’s “Blasts From the Past” (how they escaped the “no other Kryptonians except Superman” rule is unknown to me.)
She doesn’t realize that they’re actually being held as tiny prisoners back in Metropolis’ S.T.A.R. Labs, thanks to events in the eighth issue of “Superman Adventures.” Instead, she meets General Zod, a character that was surprisingly missing from the DC Animated Universe, outside of a fantasy appearance in the “Justice League Unlimited” episode “For the Man Who Has Everything.” This version of Zod was designed by Evan Dorkin to evoke Terence Stamp’s appearance in “Superman II,” and he behaves pretty much as you’d expect General Zod to act in any version of the canon.
Soon, Zod is on Earth, he’s restored Jax-ur and Mala to their proper size inside S.T.A.R. Labs, and Supergirl must face the three deadly Kryptonians with no help from her cousin. Kara obtains a sample of Kryptonite and brazenly uses it against her foes — after all, she isn’t Kryptonian, so it has no effect on her. Unfortunately, she learns that Zod is also Argoan, and just as immune as she is. With no other options, Supergirl flies to Superman’s Fortress of Solitude, in the hopes of using the Brainiac Globe to learn some weakness to use against Zod. This also requires her to face her fear of cold environments, which has plagued her ever since Argo fell into a perpetual winter. After the Brainiac Globe provides her with a helpful recap of Zod’s backstory, she’s confronted by the real thing. Zod followed her the entire way, and their ensuing battle destroys much of the Fortress. Eventually, Kara is inspired to force Zod into the pen of an Argoan creature, which must be kept under red sunlight. Zod is powerless without yellow sun, and unable to defend himself from the ghastly beast inside the pen (which is rendered in lovely detail by Blevins, who also did work on the animated DC cartoons of this era.)
Kara saves Zod’s life by using Superman’s Phantom Zone Projector to send him back to his ethereal prison, and within a few panels, she’s back in Metropolis to send Jax-ur and Mala to the Phantom Zone. This leaves Jax-ur and Mala back to their status quo from the animated series, although it does ignore Superman’s reasoning for keeping them out of the Phantom Zone — he viewed it as a form of torture and wanted Jax-ur and Mala to experience America’s more humane justice. There’s only one page left in the story, however, and no time left to explore the issue. Instead, we see Granny punished by Darkseid for failing him, a terrified Zod’s return to the Phantom Zone, and Superman back home in time to see the “Supergirl Saves City” headline from the Daily Planet, all as Kara enjoys her first winter since arriving on Earth.

“Little Girl Lost” is the introduction of Bruce Timm’s Supergirl design, which was later adopted by the comics and served as her standard look in the animated universe for years. Towards the end of “Justice League Unlimited,” Bruce Timm stated a desire to alter her “belly-tee/Doc Martens ‘riot grrrl’ outfit” following a conversation on the Toonzone forums, which convinced him that the look was too rooted in 1990s’ fashion.
Continuity Notes
“Superman Adventures” #21 explicitly states that the Justice League is already active in this continuity (in a comic published three years before their animated debut), with Supergirl even making specific references to the Flash and Aquaman. I know what many of you are thinking — this is a reference to the short-lived (and often reviled) “Adventures in the DC Universe” series, which is assuredly not DCAU canon. Possibly, but also consider that the “Justice League Unlimited” episode “Chaos at the Earth’s Core” reveals that Kara actually spent three years living on the Kents’ farm before making her debut as Supergirl. “Little Girl Lost” never gives you a specific time period, but the flashbacks in “Superman Adventures” #21 certainly could take place over the course of three years. And since it is canon that three years passed between Superman discovering Kara and her becoming Supergirl, that leaves three years of “Superman: The Animated Series” continuity that has to take place in-between the first and second scenes of “Little Girl Lost.”
My theory is that the entire first season of “Justice League” took place during those three years, simultaneously with the majority of “Superman: The Animated Series” episodes. Not only does this explain the occasional references to other heroes in the “Superman Adventures” comic, but also Lois Lane’s reference to Wonder Woman in a first season “Superman: The Animated Series” episode. They know about these characters because Superman has already helped form the Justice League — the audience just didn’t learn of this until after the run of his series was over. Since specific “Superman” continuity wasn’t referenced until after Season One of “Justice League,” I think it’s possible to make most “Superman” episodes occur in-between the first season of “Justice League.” All we need is for someone to explain away that Green Lantern episode, and everything is perfect.
Another continuity issue that you’re likely to notice is Supergirl’s immunity to Kryptonite. This was intended as a unique element of her character in this canon, but was forgotten by the time “Justice League Unlimited” debuted. The official description of the character had her “more resistant” to Kryptonite than Superman, but not nearly as immune as Dorkin/Dyer portray her.
I Love the ‘90s
“Little Girl Lost” attempts to capture a typical “youth” hangout of the era, so Intergang is recruiting at a video arcade.
“Huh?” Moment
Kara’s secret identity really makes no sense in this continuity, and I believe the producers have acknowledged this. She lives for three years with no disguise at all in Smallville, wears a brown wig and glasses when visiting Metropolis for the first time, becomes famous as Supergirl without the wig and glasses, and then goes back to her life in Smallville without the disguise. Why wouldn’t anyone recognize her as Supergirl now? She doesn’t even have a pair of Clark Kent glasses as a disguise. Are we to assume that no one in Smallville has access to media reports from outside the town?
Over the Kiddies’ Heads
The “Fleischer’s Comet” that’s hurtling towards Earth in “Little Girl Lost” is an homage to the Fleischer “Superman” cartoons of the 1940s. Specifically, the episode “The Magnetic Telescope,” which featured a similar climax.
Battle of the Dorkin/Dyer Scripts
Dorkin and Dyer have stated their disappointment with how “Little Girl Lost” turned out, given the heavy rewrites that gutted much of Supergirl’s backstory and totally altered the ending. The finished version offers little payoff to the “kids vs. adults” theme of the first chapter, and doesn’t even allow Supergirl to have a clear victory on her own. She causes a screw-up that Superman must fix, and he ends up rescuing her in the end after she passes out during her big heroic act. “Superman Adventures” #21 (“Last Daughter of Argo”) is a much more coherent story, with a clear arc for Kara, as she overcomes a personal fear and finds peace on her adopted planet. Throughout both stories, Kara is written as a likeable young heroine, and I think we’re all lucky that she escaped the cliched ’90s attempts to give teenage characters “attitude.” Kara’s upbeat and friendly, but still has enough personality to stir up some trouble and have fun. It’s an entertaining take on the character, and a testament to how strong the original concept was
and just how foolish DC was to abandon it for so many years.
